Wilson Memorial Hospital announced that Julie Bertke, RN, BSN, was selected as the second quarter recipient of the 2014 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
Linda Maurer, vice president of nursing, said that Bertke provides exceptional care to the hospital’s patients, and exhibits excellent care on a daily basis.
“Julie goes a step further with the care she provides our patients,” said Maurer. “She makes patients feel comfortable with her smile and caring attitude. We are extremely fortunate to have her on our team.”
Bertke has been a part of the Wilson Memorial Hospital team since 2008, working in both the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and Same Day Surgery (SDS). Prior to joining Wilson Memorial, she worked for Kettering Health Network at both Kettering and Sycamore hospitals.
Bertke graduated from Kettering College of Medical Arts, receiving her Registered Nurse (RN) license in 2001 and Bachelors of Science in nursing (BSN) in 2003.
Wilson Memorial Hospital picks a new nurse once every quarter to honor with the DAISY award.
The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses was established by the Daisy Foundation, a not-for-profit, based in Glen Ellen, California. The foundation was started by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but uncommon autoimmune disease.
The care Patrick and his family received from nurses inspired this means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients’ families. Today, there are more than 1,400 healthcare facilities around the country honoring their nurses with the DAISY Award.
