Dr. Bruce C. Urbanc was a physician who showed compassion to his patients and volunteered his personal time to make Wilson Health a vital community resource. Dr. Urbanc is remembered through our Dr. Bruce C. Urbanc Physician Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annually to outstanding students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the field of medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Dr. Urbanc was born in Grimsby, England on July 13, 1951 and came to the United States in his early teens, became a U.S. citizen and set his sights on becoming a doctor. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio in 1974. From there, he went to Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Missouri, and finished his medical degree in 1981. He joined the U.S. Air Force and completed his internship in general medicine from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, at the USAF Medical Center in 1982. After serving a year at USAF Hospital in Whiteman Missouri as chief of aeromedicine, he came back to WPAFB to practice aeromedicine from 1984 - 1987 and was an emergency department physician for two years at Dettmer Hospital in Troy, Ohio. After his military service was finished, he started a practice in downtown Sidney. Dr. Urbanc, along with his partner, built a thriving practice through their dedication to their patients and community.
While attending a baseball game with his family, Dr. Urbanc started not feeling well. As he got out of his seat in the stadium to get some water, he collapsed near a paramedic station. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where they discovered he had suffered a massive heart attack.
Dr. Urbanc served the hospital well as a member of the medical staff. During his 20 years of serving patients in Shelby County, Dr. Urbanc was an active physician serving to stimulate progress and enhance quality at Wilson Health. He served as the chair of medicine for the medical staff from 1992 - 1993, was the chief of staff from 1994 - 96, and served on the medical staff committee of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Quality Improvement Council. Dr. Urbanc was also an active member of the Shelby County Medical Society and Medical Director of the Pavilion in Sidney. Board certified by the American Osteopathic Association in Family Medicine, Dr. Urbanc was a member of the Wilson Health board of trustees, serving from April 1996 through March 2006. He also served as a trustee for the Wilson Health Foundation and served as a chair of the board from 2002 - 2004.
